Overview
It took Ronnie Scott, a tenor sax man, 12 years to get his dream in place in London after the night in New York where he heard Charlie Parker's Quintet with Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie's Big band with Davis jamming. Jazz comes no better than that, and there's no better jazz venue in England than Ronnie Scott's. Like many jazz clubs it started in a basement way back in 1959 with Zoot Sims, but by 1965 they'd moved to 47 Firth Street -- perhaps the most famous address in British jazz.
To understand the importance of the venue for English jazz musicians you need to know that, after the war years when Glen Miller and other American bands came to England to entertain the troops, American jazz greats rarely played England because of musician's union rules. Jazz was 'records only' -- and those expensive 78rpm at that.
These days Ronnie Scott's offers a mix of traditional, modern, bebop and other jazz performed by an international selection of musicians. Big names are usual on Friday and Saturday, but the Monday to Thursday stable features up and coming and British groups. Three bars and a considerable menu let addicts make a night of it. The cover charge is £15.00 Monday-Thursday, Friday & Saturday £20.00 for most groups and the 'upstairs' room.
