Overview
The Red Lion hides on Crown Passage in Quebec House across the street from St. James Palace behind a timbered entrance and leaded glass windows. Its been there for more than 400 years and about the only décor change is the electric lights in the old gas light fixtures. The Crown Passage is best visited late on a winter afternoon when the shops are still open but the gaslights flicker.
Tip: Those smart enough to visit London around the last Saturday in January when sales tax and tourist numbers wane, will find the pub full of Charles I fans in full Cavalier costume – think Three Musketeers – drowning their sorrow at the memory of Charles’s execution January 30, 1649.
