  Overview       Inside Tips       Virtual Tour

The four wings of the National Gallery house an extensive collection of Western European paintings. Founded in 1824, the Gallery has been in its current location since construction was completed in 1838. Artwork is arranged chronologically beginning with the Sainsbury Wing, in its own building, and then crossing over into the main building where the West, North and East Wings are located.

Over 2,000 paintings done by major artists from 1260 to 1900 are displayed throughout the museum. Walk up the steps in the Sainsbury Wing after picking up a guidebook and a floor plan to find out the location of highlighted paintings. Rooms are numbered and clearly labeled. Expect to find paintings by artists including Leonardo da Vinci, van Eyck, Botticelli and Bellini in this wing. Paintings are not cluttered together in any of the rooms and do not detract from each other. A walkway crosses over to the main building on this level, where you’ll find the masterpieces of artists including El Greco, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Monet, van Gogh, and many more. Although all are subtly decorated, each wing has a distinct décor and style.

An enormous gift shop is located back in the Sainsbury Wing on the street level. There is also a smaller gift shop in the main building and one at the Education Centre. You’ll find food at Pret A Manger, a self-service café located on the lower floor of the main building, or at Crivelli’s Garden, serving Mediterranean cuisine on the first floor of the Sainsbury Wing.

Tube: Leicester Square or Charing Cross
