  Overview         Inside Tips

The Imperial War museum has over 6 million photographs, 30,000 posters, uniforms, badges, aircraft, armored fighting vehicles and naval vessels in its collection. The museum’s collection is spread out over six sites, four of which are open to the general public. The National Army Museum in Chelsea, the Naval Museum in South Hampton, the wonderful naval exhibits in Greenwich, and the Battle of Britain, United States Air Force and British Air Force Museums in the old Croyden Airdrome all reflect the military history of Great Britain.

The museum was founded in 1917 and includes information on every British conflict of the 20th century. It focuses on the individual’s experience of war from the civilian at home to the soldier on the front. Granted, there are more tanks, aircraft, bombs, guns and other tools of destruction than anyone needs, but the guts of the museum are the exhibits that show what it was like in a WW I trench, flying over Germany when the casualty rate was 50% on night raids, or waiting for the all-clear to sound during the nightly London Blitz. Art, propaganda posters certainly, but also Henry Moore drawings, and a gallery of paintings, photos and more convey a sense of what daily life was like when at war.

This is certainly a special place and exhibits extend over to the Thames, where British warships past are open for visits. More poignant sections of the museum include two floors of the Lambeth road location dedicated to the Holocaust. The Imperial War Museum is unique and will be very moving to those who have experienced war first-hand.
